A Land of Progress and Opportunity Location & History: Lunenburg County is located in the south-central area of the Southern Piedmont region of Virginia. The county's two major towns of Victoria and Kenbridge (six miles apart) are 65 miles from Richmond, the state capital, 100 miles from Roanoke, and 96 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. Topography: Lunenburg County encompasses 443 square miles. The land is relatively flat in the southeast portion and is gently rolling to hilly in the north and west. Average elevation range from 350 to 500 feet above sea level. Climate: Annual average temperature 55.8. January average temp. 40. July average temp. 78. Annual average rainfall 44 inches. Local Ecomony: Manufacturing is predominant in the county's economy with major industries tied to wood products, textiles, and commercial and residential goods. Agriculture remains important, with flue-cured tobacco the largest cash corp. Other sources of farm income include the sale of timber and forest products, small grain, corn, soybeans and livestock. Population & Employment:According to the 1990 census, the County's population was 11,419. AS of Jan. of 1999, Lunenburg County had a labor force of 4,8250 workers and an unemployment rate of 5.1%. Virginia is a right-to-work state. Government: Lunenburg County is governed by a seven-member Board of Supervisors. A County Administrator oversees the daily activities of the county, each town is managed by a town manager who reports to a six-member town council. Twelve sheriff's deputies are employed and there are four state police assigned to the area. Kenbridge (6 officers) and Victoria (four officers). Both towns maintain volunteer fire and rescue departments that provide services beyond corporate limits. Local Taxes: In Virginia, counties and cities are separate taxing entities. A manufacturing company pays either county or city tax, depending on its location. However, if it is located within a towns' corporate limits, it is subject to both town and county levies.
Transportation: Air - The nearest commercial airport is Richmond International Airport (75 miles). Air freight service is available. Raleigh-Durham Airport (102 miles) provides additional commercial and freight service. The Lunenburg County Municipal Airport has a 3,000 ft. paved, lighted runway with fuel available. Community Facilities: Recreational opportunities in Lunenburg County are provided on a regular basis through schools, churches, 4-H clubs, and various organizations. The recreational facilities include lighted ball parks, picnic areas, country clubs, and a community building for skating, dancing and other activities. The great outdoors offers abundant hunting, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, biking, jogging, hiking and camping. Each year in May, Kenbridge hosts the Strawberry Festival and in October, Victoria hosts the Autumn Days Festival. Industrial Sites: The Lunenburg CommerCentre, a 138.32 acre industrial park, is located in the Town of Kenbridge. The Town provides water and sewer services. The park is equipped with 6" and 8" sewer mains, 8" and 12" water mains, as well as a 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank. Eighty-five percent of the park is cleared, level or gently rolling> Natural Resources: Lunenburg County is comprised of 282,880 acres. 211,760 acres are comprised of forestland. Most of the woodland is made up of hardwoods and pine, while a large portion of the harvested land is planted with loblolly pine.
