College Passports Provide Success into the Future
Virginia Lieutenant Governor John H. Hager told the youngsters the community and state are joining forces to help make each child the best and brightest in order to succeed in the future's job market. "Higher education is critical in the job market," Hager said. "We're trying to give all the students the tools and knowledge needed to be successful in that market." He pledged to the kids that, if they worked hard, contributed to the community, and graduated from high school, their first year of community college would be paid for. "This is an investment in the children and a vote of confidence in their future." he added. Cantor praised the local communities that are joining forces to help educate their young. "Through this partnership, the VCSP will be able to reach children at an exceptionally young and impressionable age," Cantor said. "The promise of college to an elementary school student sends a message of high expectation." Greensville Elementary's new state-of-the-art auditorium was the perfect setting for the pomp and circumstance provided for the children. Each child marched into the auditorium, and across the stage to receive their college passport rolled up and tied with a ribbon, replicating a diploma. They received plastic red piggy banks, too!Members of the Greensville High School band played the usual graduation music, and the leaders of SVCC added to the ambiance by marching in their caps and gowns. Dr. John J. Cavan, president of SVCC, urged the children to never give up their goals of becoming educated. "Education gives you a gift of independence," he said. "Never give up. I'm looking forward to each of you marching across the stage to get your real diploma one day, and I'll personally be there to give it to you!" Local officials from Mecklenburg County also attended Monday's ceremony including Division Superintendent Rebecca Sutherland, members of the Mecklenburg School Board, and members of the Mecklenburg Business Education Partnership. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the children," said Sutherland. "We're very appreciative of the people who put this together." South Hill resident Kendall Bagwell, mother of nine-year-old Jacob, is also happy to know her son has his first year of college paid for. "I just wish all the kids in Mecklenburg County could do it," she added. With community businesses involved in the process, the program has room for expansion. "Business partners like Century 21 Clary and Associates are committed to helping the emotional and cultural needs of the children involved," Clary said. "The pledge we've made today sends a strong message. We love these children. We know they can succeed. College is a way to ensure their success. Thanks to good people in our community, we've found a way to send these kids to college." |
