College Passports Provide Success into the Future
Local students get one year of college...free

EMPORIA, VA -- Cory Crutchfield wants to be a doctor. Chelsie Feggins wants to follow in her parents' family business and become an undertaker.

Both Mecklenburg County fourth grade students received a boost towards reaching those goals Monday when they received a passport for their first year of college - prepaid!

Seventy-nine fourth graders from South Hill Elementary School traveled by bus Monday morning to Greensville Elementary School where they joined 190 first graders from Greensville County during a community-wide celebration of education. Each of the 269 students received a pledge of one year of community college free, provided they graduate from high school.

Century 21 Clary and Associates, led by its president Jean Clary, is the corporate sponsor for the South Hill fourth graders and a co-sponsor with BB&T Bank in Emporia for the Greensville Elementary first graders. In partnership with the Virginia College Savings Plan (VCSP) and the Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), Clary and her employees will make personal contributions towards one-year scholarships at SVCC for the 269 students. Clary and her staff also recently sponsored an auction sale in South Hill which contributed donations to the fund.

To kick off the scholarship program, Clary presented a check Monday for $12,500 on behalf of herself and her associates to Diana F. Cantor, executive director of the VCSP. Funding for the scholarships will be administered by the VCSP's supporting foundation, the Virginia College Dream Foundation. The VCSP's state agency was created to help families save for college through the Virginia Prepaid Education Program and the new Virginia Education Savings Trust.

SVCC's Foundation will also raise money to fund scholarships for the children.

"There are many people from the community who are here today just for you." Clary told the children. "We're here because you are very, very special."
